Artsy Magazine

Bay Area Group commissioned Aloïs Marignane to create a full-page illustration for its Artsy magazine. The ambition was to capture the atmosphere of the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco, a place that celebrates the artistic and cultural diversity of the African diaspora.

In the foreground, a large-format photo of an African-American woman stands out. In the background, people maneuver a huge photograph of a famous trumpeter. Outside, through the museum’s large windows, the bustling streets of San Francisco come to life. The illustration captures the dynamic atmosphere of the city, underlining the museum’s role as a meeting point between the past, present and future of the African diaspora.

The Museum of the African Diaspora

The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), located in San Francisco since 2005, celebrates the universal link between people and Africa, the cradle of humanity. It highlights the individual experiences and stories of these diverse peoples. The museum, designed by Deborah Sussman of Sussman/Prejza, has refocused on artists from diverse diasporas and features rotating exhibitions including artists from the Middle East and Africa. The MoAD organizes events throughout the year, celebrating the African diaspora in all its richness and diversity.
