A dive into the history of the french Left

This article, written by Gilles Candar, explores the rich political history of socialism in France, from the time of the Paris Commune to the present day. Historian Gilles Candar’s book “Pourquoi la gauche?” (Why the Left?) is the starting point for this reflection. It looks back at the various currents that have shaped French socialism, highlighting the relationship with the Republic, compromises made in the face of right-wing unions, ideological evolutions linked to specific political contexts, and a resilient cultural base despite electoral setbacks. The article shows how history sheds light on contemporary issues and political choices. Télérama commissioned Aloïs Marignane to visually represent this complex history.

Jaurès on the edge of history

The illustration shows Jean Jaurès, a major figure in French socialism. He is seated on a precarious chair, itself balanced on a huge cake, its slices scattered in all directions. This image evokes the idea that Jaurès, and by extension socialism, is balanced precariously on the edge of history. A fall seems imminent, symbolizing the challenges to unity and the dilemmas the socialist movement has had to face over the years.

Télérama: a benchmark cultural magazine

Télérama is a French weekly cultural magazine founded in 1947 by Georges Montaron. Its vocation is to cover a wide range of cultural fields, including cinema, music, literature, theater and cultural life in general. Although Télérama publishes television programs, its content goes far beyond them, setting it apart from its competitors specializing in TV programs. The magazine appears every Wednesday, covering programs from Saturday to Friday of the following week. Télérama, a subsidiary of Le Monde Group, continues to play an essential role in providing quality cultural criticism and analysis, becoming a benchmark for arts and culture enthusiasts in France.
